JR SR Counselor Information
Instructor: Ms. Powell
Holyoke JR/SR High School's Mission:

To graduate every student prepared with the necessary knowledge, skill, and character to find success in life.

Mrs. Powell's philosophy regarding a positive counseling/ guidance program

I believe that my role as a school counselor is to stand in support of, advocate for, and work with all students in the school.  My role must support both the school districts overall mission, as well as, the mission of the counseling program. My goal is to view each student as a unique, highly capable person with individual goals, strengths, and weaknesses.

Because students are all unique and changeable individuals, the types of counseling that a school counselor will provide will often times be varied.  Many times it is completely appropriate for large group sessions to discuss board, overarching topics. Other times it is beneficial to provide more intensive small group time where students with similar struggles or concerns can meet and feel more comfortable sharing.  Finally, there are times when students will need one on one work with the counselor for issue that are often times, very personal and that are having a very profound impact on the student.  In all of these settings it is important for the counselor’s role in the session.  The counselor does not always have to play the role of the leader; especially in small group settings where empowering the students with some of the active roles might foster important personal growth.  A counselor should always be flexible and willing to adapt to the needs of the students that are being served.

The goals of the counseling program at a school are the goals of the district.  Counselors, teachers, and administration  work closely to align the counseling goals to the academic, career, and postsecondary goals of the school.  It is vital that the visions meet and connect with one another. A student cannot be successful without both the social and academic working together.
